Searching for genuine fish, chips
LUNCH BUNCH
Two can eat out for less than $20
Accent staffer and Wisconsin native Suzy Kridner Wymes and her sister Peg Haldorson were raised on Friday night fish fries. Suzy has searched– even in England — to find a similar dish. In the past, she and her family had enjoyed the fish and chips at Sly Fox Inn in South Daytona, and she now found the dish at Slyfox On Beachside, owned and operated by several employees of the former Sly Fox. Suzy and Peg had lunch there — on Friday, naturally.
Q. How did the place look?
It’s even more casual than the original Sly Fox with cute sayings on the walls, beer signs and a little toy fox in a cage.
Q. What did you order?
Of course, I ordered fish and chips, with a side of creamy coleslaw ($1.75 extra). The two-piece fish dinner is $6.95 and came in a plastic basket on wax paper. When asked about the type of fish used, an employee said, “We’ve always used pollack, and we always will.” The chips are a flat shape with the potato skins still on. Peg had a cheeseburger ($6.50) with no lettuce and the onions grilled. While she ordered the “one full pound” burger medium and pink inside, it arrived well done. But the sandwich was tasty, and huge. Her fries were $1 extra.
Q. What to drink?
Peg had a draft beer ($3) since it was her day off, and I had water with lemon. Our server checked often on drinks.
Q. What if I don’t want fish?
Also on the menu are meatloaf, liver and onions and other pub specialties like shepherd’s pie and bangers and mash. The kids’ menu has fish and chips, the usual hamburgers, grilled cheese and chicken fingers, along with octodog, a hot dog cut up like an octopus and fried.
Q. What was your total?
It was $20.98, including tax but not tip.
Q. Would you go back?
Yes, especially when I need my fish-fry fix.
